Steak is better when it is served hot- said every steak lover forever. People always think that ordering steak from outside is easier because cooking it takes a good deal of time. But if you have a party in your home and you want the perfect steak, learn how to cook a steak in a frying pan!
Here, I will show you the easiest method of cooking steak with the help of a frying pan. You do not need an oven or air fryer here! All you need is your ingredients, a stove, and a pan, that’s all!
Step-by-Step Process How to Cook a Steak in a Frying Pan

Step 1: Cut the Meat
The first job you have to do here is to take the piece of steak in your hand. Making sure that it properly cuts the steak piece is also necessary. The thickness of the steak will make it juicier. Yes, you might worry that someone cannot cook properly thick steak pieces in a frying pan.
But trust us; if you know how to cook a thick steak in a frying pan properly, there’s no going back! It is always better to get a boneless piece of meat for a steak that is 1 inch to 1.5 inches thick. The thickness and the length also depend on the frying pan you are using.
If you get the 12 inch frying pan, you can cook steak of any thickness. And for the meat, the 1.5-inch thickness is just the right size! In some cases, you might want to get something thinner as some people like thinner steak too! Go for your preferred thickness in such situations.
Step 2: Marinating the Steak
Once you are done cutting it, marinate it properly. For this, take the meat piece in a glass container and then add the marinade. It is always a good idea to marinate the piece overnight if you want a juicier result.
If you don’t like too much marinade, you can use lemon or other citrus juices for the process and marinate it for 2 hours. Now, get a sealing material and seal the container so that air cannot get in or out. Put the container in the fridge for 2 hours or more.
Step 3: Wait for the Steak
After you are done with the marinating period, take the meat out and add some salt. Adding kosher salt on both sides will bring out the actual taste of the steak. Let the salt soak for some moments.
And wait for the steak to get ready. As you have taken the steak right out of the fridge, you have to wait for some time so that the steak can come to room temperature. It will take more or less 30 to 60 minutes for the process.
Step 4: Get the Pan Ready
When your steak is almost ready to cook, get our pan out and place it on the stove. I prefer a cast-iron skillet for the steak preparation process because that’s how you can get the actual flavor of the meat! Pour oil into the pan and wait for the oil to get hot.
Waiting for 1 minute is enough for the oil to get the right amount of heat to make steam. When you are using vegetable oil, the bottom part of the pan must be covered with oil and no area should be dry. The even layer will help to cook the steak properly without any burning situation.
Have faith in the high heat while doing this. If you do not want to use vegetable oil, olive oil can be an amazing substitute for this method. Go for it!
Step 5: Start Cooking
As your oil is ready, place the stake in the oil. Here, temperature plays a very important role. If the temperature along with the timing is not right, you are going to ruin the fun! All you have to do is cook the steak on each side properly.
It will take more or less 3 to 6 minutes for every side. Keep in mind that the thicker the steak, the more time it will need to get cooked. For moderate steak, you won’t need over 5 minutes and after 5 minutes, you will see the brown color.
NB: For more pinky steak, go for less time. After you’re done with one side, settle for the other side and again cook it for 3 to 6 minutes. For faster cooking, flip the steak every 30-45 seconds.
Step 6: Check the Temperature
When you are worrying too much about the perfection of the steak, you must have your eyes on the temperature. I recommend you get a cooking thermometer that can help you understand the right temperature for your food. If you do not have a thermometer, you can try to use your finger to know if your steak is properly cooked or not.
First, touch the middle finger to the thumb, and then, with the right hand, poke the fleshy spot underneath the thumb. Here, if you are left-handed, use your left hand. With the same finger, poke the steak now. If the feeling is the same, understand that your steak is a medium-rare situation.
For a medium steak, use the ring finger and touch it to the thumb, and for a rare steak, use the index finger with the thumb. If you want a well-done steak, rely on the pinkie finger touch it to the thumb and apply the same process. When you touch the steak, compare the feeling and if it’s the same, your steak is well-done!
Step 7: Serve the Steak
If you serve the steak hot, you will have the best out of it. However, be careful not to serve it too hot that it burns your mouth. After removing the food from the pan, let it settle down for 5-10 minutes.
As a result, the juice inside the steak settles and does not drip down when you cut it. Now, you can serve the steak the way it is or you can cut it into slices and serve in a tray!
